Plastic in the Oceans (Infographics)- by Alumniportal Deutschland

”A large proportion of what we buy and use every day is made of synthetic material – and a large part of it ends up in the ocean. Tooth brushes, one-way razors and plastic bags collect in the eddies of the seas; huge masses of plastic are the result. The largest mass is in the Pacific Ocean: According to some estimates, it is approximately as large as Central Europe. It is called the “Great Pacific Garbage Patch”.”

706-Carat Diamond Discovery In Sierra Leone

Pastor Emmanuel Momoh, who also works as a miner, discovered the 706-carat diamond in Kono district, the government said in a statement.

Diamonds are sold by the carat (shown as ct.), which is actually a unit of weight, though most think of a carat in terms of size. Read more here



Thorny devil assisted by gravity to drink water

A team of researchers with Aachen University in Germany has found that the thorny devil lizard is able to supplement its water intake by covering its body with sand and then using straw-like folds in its skin to pull in water, which is then directed to its throat. In their paper published in the Journal of Experimental Biology, the team describes experiments they carried out with several lizard specimens, what they observed and the means by which the odd-looking lizards survive in the arid desert region of Western Australia.
